High midlife fitness tracked 31% lower dementia risk, independent of coronary artery calcium

Only the group that lifted weights kept its diabetes-risk gain a year after the diet ended

221 women dieted to a healthy BMI, then regained about a third of it. Predicted heart and diabetes risk fell and then bounced back in every group but one: the arm that had added resistance training held on to its diabetes benefit.

Fitter 46-year-olds cost the Finnish health system 11% less a year, and grip strength mattered too

Fitness studies usually stop at disease risk. Researchers linked step-test and grip-strength results for 4,468 Finns to six years of national spending records, then used genetics to test whether the link was causal.

Combining cardio and weights lowered deaths by 60% in coronary heart disease trials

Cardiac rehabilitation has long meant a treadmill. A Sports Medicine Open meta-analysis of randomized trials found adding resistance training beat aerobic exercise alone on fitness and quality of life, and cut mortality against usual care.

Exercise for muscle loss peaked near 690 MET-minutes a week, then the benefit fell away

A Geriatric Nursing network meta-analysis of 29 randomized trials modeled dose curves for sarcopenia. Grip strength and walking both improved from 140 MET-minutes, both turned over at the top, and each preferred a different exercise.
