Irregular meal times tracked anxiety. Irregular sleep did not.

In 2,945 French-speaking adults, the gap between weekday and weekend eating schedules was linked to anxiety, depression and insomnia. Sleep timing showed nothing.

Most advice about eating and mood concerns what goes on the plate. A study in the Journal of Affective Disorders looked at the clock instead, and found that when people ate tracked their mental health while when they slept did not.

The researchers introduce the field briefly: chrono-nutrition, when, not only what, one eats relative to circadian timing, is an emerging determinant of mental health. Their specific test was whether Meal Timing Jetlag, the workday-to-free-day discordance in eating schedules, is associated with anxiety and with depressive and insomnia symptoms, independently of sleep-based circadian misalignment.

That last clause is the whole design.

What was measured

The analysis drew on the ALIMENTAL 2 French-speaking online cohort, with 2,945 participants.

Sleep timing was assessed with the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire and meal timing with a Food Timing Screener, with anxiety, depression and insomnia each captured on a standard scale. Models adjusted for age, sex, BMI, unemployment, financial difficulty and shift work.

Shift work is an important thing to adjust for here, since it disrupts both eating and sleeping schedules and could otherwise account for everything.

The eating result

In the primary model of 2,817 people, meal timing jetlag was independently associated with anxiety, at 0.47 per hour with a range from 0.14 to 0.79.

The shape mattered too. The relationship was J-shaped, with the slope above one hour reaching 1.03 per hour. Small variation looked unremarkable; larger swings carried the association.

The pattern held for the other two outcomes. Meal timing jetlag was also associated with depressive symptoms, at 1.81, and insomnia severity, at 0.90.

The comparison that makes it interesting

Here is the sentence that separates this from a routine correlation.

Sleep-based circadian phase and sleep social jetlag were not associated with those outcomes.

Both sleep measures were in the same models, on the same people, and neither showed anything while the eating measure did. The obvious explanation, that irregular eaters are simply people with chaotic lives and disrupted sleep, does not fit what the data did.

That does not prove eating schedules are causally special. It does mean the finding survives the first objection anyone would raise.

How much this is worth

Not much, per hour, and the authors are refreshingly direct about it: the per-hour anxiety effect is modest, at roughly 12% of the minimal clinically important difference on the anxiety scale used.

A person would need several hours of meal timing jetlag before the modelled effect reached the smallest change they could actually notice. This is a population signal, not something to read off your own weekend brunch habit.

The limits, which the authors state themselves

The design cannot establish causality; reverse causation cannot be excluded. Everything was captured in one sitting.

That matters more than usual here. Anxiety, depression and insomnia all disrupt appetite, routine and motivation to cook. A depressed person eating at erratic times is at least as plausible as erratic eating causing depression, and one snapshot cannot separate them.

The authors also flag that the cohort was online and 80% female, limiting generalisability. People who join an online nutrition study are not a random sample of anyone. People who join an online nutrition study are not a random sample of anyone.

Meal timing was self-reported through a screener rather than recorded as it happened.

What it is good for

The conclusion is appropriately narrow: meal-timing regularity may be a candidate correlate of anxiety, depression and insomnia, warranting longitudinal and interventional confirmation before any clinical recommendation.

What the study does contribute is a testable idea with a clean internal control already attached, which is more than most nutrition-and-mood research manages.

What is meal timing jetlag?

The mismatch between when you eat on working days and on free days, calculated much like the better-known social jetlag for sleep. Someone who eats breakfast at 7am on weekdays and 11am at weekends has four hours of it. The concept comes from chrono-nutrition, the study of when eating happens relative to the body clock rather than what is eaten.
