A Food & Function review pooled 17 randomized trials and 1,423 adults to rank fiber against fiber rather than against nothing. Viscous soluble fiber beat placebo on difficulty passing stool at high certainty, the strongest grade in the paper.

Probiotics trimmed waist size in adults with metabolic syndrome, but left blood pressure alone
An Obesity Reviews analysis of 19 randomized trials in adults with metabolic syndrome found probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics reduced waist circumference and body weight. Blood pressure did not move, and neither did body mass index.
