University of Eastern Finland researchers gave 2,495 older adults a placebo or one of two vitamin D3 doses for five years. The higher dose matched placebo on fractures; the lower one came with an unexplained excess.

Bone is not on the checklist for type 1 diabetes, and fracture screening is aimed at people decades older. Comparing 5,035 patients against 12,286 controls found the excess risk starts early.
